About the Author

Hilda Demuth-Lutze grew up in rural Racine County, Wisconsin.  According to her younger brothers and sisters, she spent most of her childhood reading.

A graduate of Valparaiso University with a master’s degree from Penn State, Hilda teaches American literature, British literature, film literature, and creative writing at Chesterton High School in Northwest Indiana.

When she is not grading papers or wrangling students, Hilda enjoys playing in a contra dance band called the Hoosier Recruits. She and her husband Mark raised their three children in a farmhouse on a few acres north of Valparaiso, where the family keeps a large garden and a small flock of sheep.

Hilda’s other historical novels, co-authored with her sister Emily Demuth Ishida, are Plank Road Summer, Plank Road Winter, and Hattie’s War, all of which are set in nineteenth-century Wisconsin.

  1. I enjoyed reading your books, which you very generously gave me while we were staying at Sidney Sussex College, Cambridge.
I should say that I enjoyed the breakfast with you at Sidney Sussex and I long for those days.
